Dr. Subramanian Swamy has had a long and extraordinary association with IIT Delhi. He has been a Professor of Economics at the Institute (1969-91) from which he resigned upon becoming Union Commerce, Law and Justice Minister. He has served on the Board of Governors of IIT Delhi (1977-80) and on the Council of IITs at the Ministry of Education, Government of India (1981-83). He was awarded a doctorate in Economics by Harvard based on his research with two Nobel Laureates Simon Kuznets and Paul A Samuelson. Upon completing his Ph.D., Dr. Swamy joined the faculty of economics at Harvard and has taught there for around 12 years since 1964. He is currently a visiting professor at the summer school at Harvard University. Dr. Swamy has published widely on economics, index number theory and China’s economy. He has also authored ten books including four books on China. Dr. Swamy is President of the Janata Party since 1990 of which he was a founding member. He has been elected Member of Parliament five times (1974-99) and held Cabinet positions in the Union Government twice, first as a Minister for Commerce, Law and Justice (1990-91) and later as Chairman with Cabinet rank of the Commission on Labor Standards and International Trade (1994-96). He also worked as Assistant Economic Affairs Officer, United Nations Secretariat, New York in 1963 and as Member of India’s Planning Commission (1990-91).
